BB4CK Central Kitchen Volunteer Roles

Early Bird
Early Bird volunteers kick-start our morning production, ensuring kids in our BB4CK community receive nutritious lunches. They set up the kitchen, make most of the daily sandwiches, and prep for the larger volunteer group. Tasks include making and sealing sandwiches, prepping fruit, and following health and safety guidelines.
Typical shift: Monday to Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Morning Prep
Morning Prep volunteers ensure an efficient kitchen flow by preparing and organizing fresh food items and baked goods for same-day and next-day production. They keep the kitchen organized and welcoming, following health and safety guidelines to support a successful day of lunch production.
Shift: Monday to Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Morning Production
Morning Production volunteers start at 8 a.m., continuing the lunch prep started by Early Bird volunteers to ensure lunches are ready for delivery by 10 a.m. They make and seal sandwiches, wash and chop produce, and set up prep tables while following health and safety guidelines. This role also fosters camaraderie with group volunteers.
Shift: Monday to Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Afternoon Production
Afternoon Production volunteers lead and support groups in our downtown kitchen alongside the BB4CK Kitchen Volunteer Engagement Coordinator. They engage volunteers, oversee food prep, and bring energy to the experience—sometimes even organizing friendly energy ball-making competitions! While following health and safety guidelines, they help ensure a fun, productive environment while prepping for the next day’s lunches.
Shift: Monday to Thursday, 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Inventory Receiver
Inventory Receiver volunteers ensure kitchen operations run smoothly by managing food deliveries and organizing fridges, freezers, and pantries. Their accuracy and organization help Early Bird, Morning Production, and group volunteers quickly access ingredients, keeping lunch prep on schedule so kids can enjoy their lunches at noon.
Shift: Monday to Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m

Snack Pack
Snack Pack volunteers keep the food assembly line running smoothly by labeling and packing school delivery bins with nutritious snacks. Their work ensures bins are ready for Lunch Pack volunteers to complete lunch prep for Calgary’s kids.
Shift: Monday to Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m

Delivery Driver
Delivery Driver volunteers are essential to ensuring lunches reach schools on time each day. Responsibilities include loading bins, driving designated routes, delivering lunches, collecting empty bins and ice packs from the previous day, and returning them to the kitchen. By bridging the gap between our kitchens and kids, they help ensure every child gets the food they need.
Shift: Monday to Thursday, with pick-up times at 9:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m., and 10:00 a.m. (shifts are typically 2 hours long).
* This role also runs during the summer to support lunches deliveries for kids in our Summer Camp Program.

Summer Production
Summer Volunteers ensure kids in summer camps receive nutritious food by preparing and packing lunches. They assist with making sandwiches, prepping fruits and snacks, and organizing bins—all while following health and safety guidelines. Their support helps keep kids nourished and energized for summer activities.
Shift: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (July to August).
