Food insecurity for kids and families

Food insecurity is the experience of struggling to afford food. It can look like worrying about food, compromising on quality and quantity or skipping meals altogether.

Right now, 2 in 5 kids in Alberta are experiencing food insecurity. That’s up 25% compared to last year, and it affects families across our city.

For kids, it can mean feeling embarrassed at lunchtime, struggling to focus, or missing out on moments of connection with friends.
For families, it can look like constant worry and tough choices.

But when care comes together, it can show up as a nutritious lunch, bringing focus, energy, connection, and a little more ease to kids and families.

Care shows up in many ways

It shows up in lunches made with care.
In teachers who notice when something feels off.
In parents working hard.
In neighbours who step in.
In people who choose to get involved.

When that care comes together, it becomes something powerful:  a community showing up for kids and families across our city.

And that care shows up in every part of Calgary.

In schools

Close to 8,000 kids receive lunches every school day across more than 280 schools, helping them feel ready for their day.

In community

More than 800 volunteers, along with donors and partners, come together in our Central Kitchen and 22 community groups to support kids and families across Calgary.

In summer camps

Support continues beyond the school year through 29 summer camps and school programs, helping kids access the food they need throughout the summer break.

Where Care Grows, Community Thrives

This map highlights how care comes together across Calgary to make sure kids have access to food.

Your care goes twice as far

Thanks to ARC Resources, the power of care goes even further this month. The first $100,000 will be matched, turning community support into even more lunches for kids across Calgary. That means your care can help power twice as many lunches this month.

It costs $4 to make and deliver one lunch.
With the match from ARC Resources, that same amount can power two lunches.

      What’s Happening This May?

There are many ways to see how care comes together across our community this month.

May 11 – 31 – Interactive Display at The CORE

We’ve partnered with The CORE to bring an interactive display to Level 2 of the mall. Stop by the “This Is What Care Looks Like” display to see how care comes together in our community. It’s a great one to check out while you’re there!

BB4CK volunteers will be onsite during select weekdays at lunch hour (May 12, 14, 20, 27, and 28).

      May 23 – BB4CK at the Calgary Servus Marathon – Kid’s Race

We’re excited to cheer on the youngest runners by providing a delicious energy ball to each participant in the Kids’ Race.

May 25 – Brown Bagging It Day

On May 25, we mark Brown Bagging It Day—a national day of awareness that raises awareness of food insecurity and its impact on kids and families.

Here in Calgary, we’ll be gathering in our kitchen alongside community leaders to recognize the role of care in supporting kids and families across our city.

Care in action in our kitchen

There’s a little extra energy in the kitchen this month! Throughout the month, volunteers will take part in fun challenges and activities, bringing the campaign to life in a hands-on way.

Want to be part ot it?

Volunteers are at the heart of BB4CK (that’s us!)

Every lunch is made, packed, and delivered by people who care. In the kitchen and on the road, you’ll find individuals, families, and teams coming together—sharing time, energy, and care throughout the year.

It’s a hands-on way to be part of something meaningful, connect with others, and see the impact of care in real time.

      About Brown Bagging It Month

May is Brown Bagging It Month, Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) annual campaign to raise awareness about food insecurity and its impact on kids and families in Calgary.

What began as Brown Bagging It Day on May 25 has grown into a month-long campaign in our city, bringing stories and a public display with activations at The CORE that show how care comes together in our community.

This year’s campaign highlights how care shows up in our community and what it makes possible. When that care comes together, it powers more than a lunch. It helps kids feel energized during the day, stay focused, and feel connected at school, and brings a little ease for families.

Every lunch is powered by a community that cares.
