Mayor Jyoti Gondek Joins Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids to Prepare Lunches for Students

Sep 4, 2025

Thirty-eight percent of kids in Alberta are growing up in a household experiencing food insecurity. That’s more than 1 in 3 children relying on limited or less nutritious food options. In Calgary, Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) works with the community to make sure kids have access to food at school every day.

Media are invited to join Mayor Jyoti Gondek on Monday, September 8, as she rolls up her sleeves in a BB4CK kitchen to help volunteers prepare lunches (7:45 – 9:15 a.m. at 909 11 Avenue SW).

As part of BB4CK’s Back to School: To Learn, Play and Grow campaign, Mayor Gondek will spend her morning in the kitchen, working side by side with volunteers who come together to provide lunches for close to 8,000 kids in over 290 Calgary schools—without a waitlist. This will be an opportunity to shine a light on the power of community to ensure every child has the food they need to learn, play, and grow.

Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) is a community-funded, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to ensuring kids in our city have access to the food they need to thrive. Together with volunteers, parents, school staff, and donors, we connect kids to food through the school lunch program, summer camps, and by supporting families with grocery cards. We are committed to providing low-barrier, dignified access to food, ensuring kids feel cared for and supported by their community.
