Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) Preparing to Continue Providing Lunches if a Strike Happens

Oct 2, 2025

With teachers giving notice of a possible strike beginning October 6, Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) is preparing to ensure children in Calgary continue to access the lunches they need, even if schools close.

Every school day, BB4CK provides nearly 8,000 lunches to kids at more than 290 schools across the city. With more than 1 in 3 children in Alberta living in a household experiencing food insecurity, the need for food will not go away if a strike takes place.

“We hope a strike can still be avoided, but if it does happen, kids will still need food,” said Bethany Ross, Executive Director of BB4CK. “We’ve been preparing a plan to make sure children can continue to access healthy lunches, no matter what.”

BB4CK will share full details of its plan, including how families can access lunches, if the strike is confirmed. Updates will also be available at bb4ck.org/strike-response.
