Supporting Volunteer Drivers: BB4CK’s Mileage Program

Mar 17, 2025

BB4CK’s volunteer drivers play a key role in ensuring that kids across Calgary receive the lunches they need every school day. To support them in this important work, we introduced the BB4CK Volunteer Driver Mileage Program in February, after hearing feedback from our amazing drivers.

With over 7,800 kids receiving BB4CK lunches every school day—the highest number we’ve ever served—volunteer drivers are more important than ever. They don’t just deliver lunches—they help ensure every kid has access to the food they need to learn, play, and grow.

For Richard Trenam, being a volunteer driver is a way to stay connected to the community and give back. Richard started volunteering 17 years ago as a kitchen volunteer before transitioning to delivery driving after retiring in 2020. Today, you’ll find him loading up his car and driving across the city every Monday morning, making sure lunches get where they need to go.

There are times when a teacher or school staff helps you unload, and they get kids to bring the bins inside. The kids always say, ‘Thank you, mister! Thank you!’ It’s satisfying to see the look on their faces, Richard says.

How the Program Works

The Volunteer Driver Mileage Program runs from February 3 to August 31, 2025, supporting registered volunteer drivers delivering lunches to Calgary schools.

Drivers can choose between two options:

1️⃣  Mileage reimbursement based on the CRA mileage allowance rate or

2️⃣ A Gift-in-Kind tax receipt for the equivalent mileage

Who Can Apply?

🔵  The program is open to registered BB4CK volunteer drivers delivering lunches to Calgary schools on assigned routes.

🔵  Both current delivery drivers and new volunteers who sign up before August 31, 2025, are eligible.

And the best part? You don’t have to do it alone! Many of our volunteer drivers turn their delivery route into a shared experience, spending time with a partner, child, or friend while doing something meaningful for the community. Whether it’s a chance to catch up, chat, or just enjoy the drive together.
